Dental hygiene is very important for the health and
wellbeing of our whole body. Unfortunately a hectic modern lifestyle and junk
food abuse have lately created a lot of problems for our dental health. The
good news is that by following a few simple rules you can keep your teeth in a
good condition.
1) Good
dental hygiene starts from an early age: There are soft bristle tooth brushes
specially design for babies. It is also important that kids acquire the habit
of brushing their teeth twice a day from an early age.
2) Brush
twice a day after meals: It is recommendable to have a fixed routine of
brushing your teeth at least twice a day. The lack of brushing your teeth will
not only leave you a bad breath but bacteria and decay will build up on your
teeth. If it is not possible to brush your teeth then try at least rinsing them
with water or eating sugar free gum as this helps stimulating saliva which
neutralizes the acid build up.
3) Change
the tooth brush periodically: It is recommendable to change your toothbrush
every 3 to 4 months. Using an old toothbrush that has bristle in bad condition
will not only not clean your teeth properly but it might eventually damage your
teeth and gums over the course of time.
4) Dont
forget to floss: Toothbrushes do not always manage to remove all particles of
food between the teeth therefore it is essential to floss twice a day. It is important to go to the dentist for
advice about flossing before attempting to do it for the first time, as an incorrect
technique might cause bleeding gums.
5) Avoid
tobacco: Smoking or chewing tobacco will
rot the teeth, damage the gums in addition to creating many other diseases.
Smoking also leaves yellow teeth.
6) Limit
fake sugar in your diet: Many foods
contain sugar so it is not necessary to cut sugar out of our diet completely,
however it is the foods which contain artificial sugar the ones we need to
worry about. It is especially important to avoid sugary foods and drinks
between meals as by doing this your teeth will get a chance to be re-
mineralised by saliva.
7) Cut
your weekly alcohol intake: Alcohol is one of the teeths worst enemies. It
causes a dramatic increase to the risk of tooth decay and many alcoholic drinks
are high on sugar.
8) Stop
thumb sucking habit: This is a natural habit for children which usually tend to
stop as kids grow older. However if this habit continues past the age of four
and five then it can hinder the normal development of teeth.
9) Visit
your dentist every six months: Even if you do not experience any pain and
everything seems to be ok you may still be suffering from small cavities or gum
problems. By visiting your dentist regularly you ensure that your problems are
discovered at an early stage which subsequently reduces the need for drastic
treatment at a later stage. Also by purchasing a dental
insurance plan we can make sure that we do not receive
any unexpected dental bills.
