Recovery is the Key to Success

The recovery period for breast augmentation surgery is perhaps the most important part of the process. Be careful to plan ahead so that you are ready to help your breasts reach their full potential.

It's the week before the big day. You've lined up your Mom to come in and wait on you hand and foot while you lie in bed and eat bucket after bucket of ice cream. You've picked out the size you want to be and taken a lot of "before" pictures. It took a lot of thought to finally come to the decision to proceed but you made it. You're as ready as you'll ever be.

Your breast augmentation surgery is in one week. Since you'll be going up a few sizes, you've outfitted your underwear drawer with five new bras but you're still not sure what to expect from the recovery. Well, here are some tips to help you make the most of your post-op.

In the days leading up to your procedure, you want to drink plenty of fluids. This may help to ward off nausea in the post-op, as a result of the anesthesia. Along with fluids, you want to always eat something when you take your medicine after the procedure. A piece of white bread or some crackers will help to prevent nausea as pain medicine can upset your stomach.

Do not, do not, do not drink alcohol within twenty-four hours before your surgery. This is very bad. It could interfere with your blood sugar or blood levels and cause the surgery to be much less effective. If you are a smoker, you want to cut back (or stop) four to six weeks prior to the procedure. Smoking can interfere with the healing process and can even lead to necrosis (tissue death) when you are getting a breast lift.

Right before you go to the hospital, make sure you remove all jewelry and/or piercings. You don't want the doctor to get caught on something and jerk it, causing you to bleed, or it could interfere with the operation. If you have your nipples pierced, these are piercings that you definitely want to take out as they would most assuredly interfere with the operation.

Your wardrobe for the days after the "big day" will need to consist of button-ups or shirts with zippers. While your breasts are tender, you're not going to want to slip on shirts over your head or wear shirts that will fight tightly against your chest. Also, it is a good idea to do all your laundry and dishes before you go under the knife because you are not going to feel like doing it during your recovery process.

A final tip is to have a heating pad handy because your back is probably going to be very sore during recovery. However, a word of warning: do not put the heating pad on your breasts as they will most likely be numb and you could burn yourself without even feeling it.

Breast augmentation surgery can be a great experience and your new breasts can be trophies that you will want to show off but you have to survive the recovery period first. With some research and preparation, you will be well on your way to the breasts you've always wanted.
