Invisalign - A New Solution to an Old Problem

Invisalign is a system of moving the teeth, similar to traditional

braces. However, the approach used for this system is remarkably

different and far less cosmetically challenging.

For many teenagers, braces are a common and almost expected part of

growing up. Look around any high school and you will see lots of

teenagers wearing traditional metal braces. However, there is a

solution now that is less invasive and far easier on the eyes (and the

mouth) than traditional braces. Invisalign is a newer method for

straightening teeth that takes a completely different approach to

solving orthodontic issues.

Invisalign is system that uses plastic trays called aligners. Aligners

are made of clear, smooth, BPA-free plastic. Each aligner is custom

made for each individual patient and fits over the teeth similar to a

snug mouth guard. Since the aligners are made to fit each patient,

there is no need for metal brackets or wires. You simply place the

aligners in your mouth and go about your day. While you are wearing

them, the aligners gently shift your teeth into place.

The Invisalign system is beneficial in many ways. Cosmetically, the

aligners are far less off-putting then the metal used for traditional

braces. For a special night out you can remove the aligners and go back

to using them once the evening is over. Also, there is no need to wait

to take a special portrait (like senior pictures or a holiday photo

shoot). Since the aligners are clear, they are virtually invisible.

Invisalign is also beneficial when it comes to personal dental hygiene.

Traditional braces make it difficult to adequately clean teeth. When

aligners are being used, they can be removed while brushing and flossing

and immediately replaced afterward. With traditional braces, certain

foods have to be avoided. With the aligners, all foods can be enjoyed

during the process.

Aligners are typically worn for two weeks at a time, and you will need

to visit your dentist about every 6 weeks. Since the process is gentle,

there is less pain involved. The plastic used to make the aligners is

smooth, so you will not have to endure cuts on your lips and cheeks.

The Invisalign system takes about the same amount of time to move your

teeth as regular braces do, but since the trays are clear and removable

it is easier to see progress along the way. Most dentists recommend

that the trays are worn for 20 to 22 hours a day, which allows for them

to be removed for meals, hygiene and the occasional special evening.

This approach to orthodontic care is remarkable. With advancements in

technology, it won’t be long before many rites of passage disappear

completely. In this case, it’s a welcome change for many.
